The Pathology Department provides a broad range of anatomic pathology and clinical laboratory diagnostic services. The team is comprised of highly-regarded physicians, many of whom have international reputations, along with laboratory technologists and support staff who utilize the most

modern techniques to make an accurate diagnosis on a patient’s biopsy, aspiration cytology or other tissue or blood specimen. Pathology is

conducted at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, our partner in adult care, where the Pathology Department has recently opened a new Center for

Advanced Molecular Diagnostics, the primary focus of which is analysis of cancer specimens.

Members of the Pathology Department are active in each disease center. Many have extensive experience in specialized areas such as the pathology of breast cancer, lung cancer, gastrointestinal cancers, prostate cancer, gynecologic cancers, hematologic malignancies, skin cancers, soft tissue

sarcomas and brain tumors. In addition, the Cytology lab has a busy and highly-regarded fine needle aspiration service.

The Department of Radiation Oncology plays a central role in treating adults and children with cancer. Our clinicians have specialized knowledge

in treating each type of cancer for which radiation therapy is indicated, and we work collaboratively with specialists across our disease-specific

treatment centers to develop an individualized radiation therapy plan for each patient, and provide supportive resources before and after treatment.

Our team also has an active research program that includes both basic (laboratory) and clinical research. Our research often involves collaboration

with other departments as we strive to better identify and treat cancer, and to develop ways to deliver higher doses of radiation to the tumor area

while reducing the effects to the surrounding healthy tissue.
