Nowhere elsein thecountry is there another institute addressing biodiversity research into inland waters on ascale comparable to that at IGB. The long-term data forthe Müggelseeand Stechlinsee (lakes) as well as forthe Spree (river),for example,are uniquein Germany. Inthe context ofthe Rivers of Europe projectthe biological diversity of Europe’s inshore waters is being documented. A focus of IOW’s research profle isthe changein diversity amongst marine life communities caused by anthropogenic and natural influences and how they impact on. important ecosystem functions. Inthe context of theHenlsinki Convention, IOW took onthe task of monitoringthe Baltic Sea. This involves regular monitoring. cruises tothe western and central Baltic Sea not only to record chemical, physical and geological data, but thediversity of planctic and benthic communities, too. This. data can be used to determine trendsin changes to thebiocoenoses and ecosystem structure and relate them to external factors. Currently, intensive investigationsare underway intothe relationship between biodiversity and ecosystem functions and how, for example,climate change impacts on them. For this purpose microorganism diversity (bacteria, protozoa) is also being. considered as microorganisms have adirect relationship to important biogeochemical matter cycles.

They pose aparticularly big. challenge to nature and species conservation and, being key species, play apartin shaping ecosystems. IZW. documents boththe threat to these groups from and. their ability to adapt to various human influencesin dialogue with representatives ofthe stakeholders involved,and developsthe fundamentals for new methods and. concepts for active conservation. It is aglobal leaderin methods of non-invasive monitoring and assisted. reproduction.
